PATHOLOGY

While medical advances in terms of treatment for sexual deficiencies are increasing, it seems that men have more and more difficulties to fulfill and enjoy their sex lives.

The concept of “impotence” is now indicating more specific terms: “Erectile Dysfunction” (ED) or “Sexual Asthenia” are used to refer to issues of sexuality in today’ society, concerning both men and women at any age.

According to statistics in Europe *:

• 25 to 35 million men over 18 are suffering from erectile dysfunction
• The majority is between 40 and 70 years old
• 25% of the population consult a physician for this condition

Sexual impotence can affect any men or women at any age, so it is important to understand its symptoms and find appropriate solutions and healing to regain a healthy sex life.

UNDERSTANDING THE MECHANISM OF ERECTION

The phenomenon of erection is orchestrated by the brain during sexual arousal (by sight, touch, smell, sound), those signals of sexual stimulation appear in the brain. These signals are then directed down to the penis through the spinal cord and nerves erector. These nerves are directly related to the arteries and corpus cavernosum of the penis.

Erection

Under the effect of these signals, the spongy body of penis, located on the bottom, become engorged with blood as the two cylinders which cavernosa, each divided by a deep artery, ensure the rigidity of the erection. Reflux of blood is blocked by the contraction of muscles at the base of the penis. The pelvic floor muscles also play a firm link of the penis to the abdomen.

In fact, the sex is more or less adjusted for individuals, their age and degree of excitement. The power of erection is moving even during its process. Sometimes, the sex is curved downward or sideways. Surgical treatments are possible when the abnormality is too pronounced.

At the beginning of the erection, the sex is strongly swollen, stiff and upright. The penis in this first phase has no such flexibility at the base and it is not possible to tilt down a lot. If this phase is putting heavy pressure on the penis, it could cause damage in some cases.

Subsequently, the erection is less strong (the sex is less full of blood) and the penis is less upraised. It is becoming much more flexible and it is possible to move in all directions.

After ejaculation, the penis rapidly loses its rigidity and the glans is often hypersensitive: the man is then obliged to stop any movement because the sensations would become unpleasant.

Then, the man enters a phase called “refractory” in which he cannot have another erection. For a young man, this stage could be very short but gradually lengthens with age and can reach a man (30 to 40 years) duration of one hour.
